eBay India's Credibility

I find it very funny that there are a number of items which are available on Sale on eBay India site which are ridiculously prices at a very nominal sum of Rs 1. But the catch lies in the shipping charges which are some times as high as Rs 300. So the net amound one ends up paying is much higher thatn real market value of the item being sold.

Under the normal circum stances the shipping charges would not exceed the value of the item (very rarely will they exceed). So, in my view, the credibility of eBay per se goes down due to such dubious sellers who try to fool potential buyers some of whom may succumb to such misleading sale.

In my view eBay should have a restriction that shipping chrges can not exceed the cost of the irems being sold. Anything above that should be an exception which will require eBay team clearance

Wonder how you feel. Frankly I use dto buy lot of things off Bazee and now hardly anything off eBay India.

Dear Neeraj

THis practice by some (or shall i say most sellers) was also seen during baazee days.

ITs unfortunate that we are still seeing the same.

Wonder why the sellers fear competition to such a extent that they need to cheat the buyers like this.

Still there is a new policy i have heard about to curb these practices ...

Hope things improve !!

Hi,

eBay has recently modified its policy regarding shipping. Now one can report excessive shipping charges as policy violation. However, it definitely does not have any relation with the Price of the product. When we send a letter, i.e., a paper of insignificant value, by DHL or similar courier, we need to shell out more than Rs.100. If you want to send a special mix of spices costing Rs.100 to your loved ones in Europe, it will cost about Rs.700 by Speed Post. So everytime the shipping Cost does not relate with the basic cost. But its also true that some sellers do ask for excessive shipping cost and are definitely in violation of eBay policy which must be reported against. .

the actual idea of a 1 paisa listing is to encourage bids for high valued products..however this hasnt been clarified by ebay..

secondly u cannot expect a seller to sell a watch for 1 re + 25 rupees shipping..coz then the seller will either have to sell a toy or source his supplies thru shop lifters.! secondly shipping charges are as high as 100 rs in case of articles below 250 gms, if the items are sent thru GATI. they are 245/- if theyre sent thru Blue dart / DHL. however shipping charges should be resonable...not excessive..and what is reasonable or excessive is arbitrary! rs. 500 shipping for a mobile may not be high but rs 500 for a pair of jeans can be considered high.

as regards havin shipping charges based on value...say u buy a mobile costing 30,000 would u pay 10% of the cost as shipping..??

Hi,

The debate that ensued on high shipping charge, on this thread is evidence enough that creating an policy for Shipping charge is difficult.

Having said that, we also believe that high shipping charges mars the buyer experience. It results in significant Unpaid Items, loss of sales & goodwill among sellers. They also result in violation of eBay fee circumvention policy.

In the interest of the community, eBay has initiated action against sellers who conduct their business with unreasonably high shipping charges.

For more details, please check the link below: http://www2.ebay.com/aw/in/200604.shtml#2006-04-13200304

We hope that the new policy and action will have a positive impact on the site inventory and user experience.

Regards,
Sapana

Hello,

The shipping policy is very vague and to not specify any thumb rule for charging shipping.

I would rather suggest that there should be a built in software in the Turbo Lister whereby the Seller has to mention the following ....

Item to be shipped as per weight? (weight of the Item)

Item to be shipped as per volume? (volume of the Item)

Value of the Item.

Taking this data and integrating with standard Courier Company ebay can flash a GREEN, YELlOW or RED alert when the Buyer buys an Item.

This would atleast creat a deterant for Seller to punch in excessively high shipping.

Shipping alert is good enough help from ebay to the Buyer and after that let Buyer has his own discreation.
