Tried to settle things 'amicably' with seller and now I am in a fix

I am new to ebay. On the 28th day after buying a camera, I returned it to the seller, after having a discussion with him as quality of the item was in question. I did not open a case against him, as we were settling the dispute amicably. It took him a while to send the camera to the main company and have it checked and asked me time for it which i gave him, as i was under the impression that my receipt of shipping the item before 30 days is proof enough, if something goes wrong later. The seller calls me and explains that the particular series of camera itself has turned out to be faulty and the company is buying them back from his shop. So i demanded him a refund, and he tried to sell me another camera. This freaked me out. I called Ebay, and a rather rude lady asserted to me I no longer have any protection as it is more than 30 days and i have not filed a 'complaint'. I contacted the seller again and discussed the matter with him after which he agreed that he would give me a refund in 2-3 days after checking with his accounts team (i wonder if that is necessary) but I dont fully trust that. I am in a fix and I have decided that it would be really foolish to make any purchase above 500 from Ebay. Who could answer this?

Hi,
eBay is a community. Rules are not all. It is the members that matters. If I want to deal honestly with my buyer, nothing else the issues.
I wont survive without my buyers support. It is as simple as that. This is true rule or policy. Your seller got to protect you in his interest.
Thanx,
Truly,
Amitava
