How to guarantee perfect 5 Star Detailed Seller Ratings (DSR) from Buyers

just stumbled upon the post, thought to share it with my fellow sellers here.

Ah yes, as an eBay seller, don’t you just love the 1 to 5 Star Detailed Seller Ratings (DSR) that eBay buyers can leave for you?

In addition to feedback, eBay buyers can leave anonymous ratings from 1 to 5 Stars on 4 criteria – Item as described, Communication, Shipping time, Shipping and handling charges.

If you’re an eBay seller, I bet you have noticed that no matter how hard you try to please your eBay buyers you always seem to get hit with a low DSR at some point.

I have compiled a list of things you can do as an eBay seller to guarantee 5 Star ratings on DSR from every one of your eBay buyers:

Item As Described:
In your eBay listing, offer to fly the item to your potential buyer’s location so they can physically handle, look at and inspect the item before bidding/buying. It’ll be like they can walk into your “store” in the comfort of their own home. They will have no reason to rate your “Item as Described” DSR low and think of all the frequent flyer miles you’ll accumulate.

Communication:
Since you already flew the item to your potential buyer’s location, make sure you take them out to dinner and talk about all of your policies so they know them before they bid/purchase.

After they bid and win or purchase your item, add their phone number to your speed dial. Call them and tell them how happy you are they bought your item and that you booked your overnight flight to deliver their package. Once you arrive, take them out for dinner again so you can talk about your return policy.

Continuing calling your buyer daily until they leave feedback and Detailed Seller Rating to see how they are doing, how they like the item, and anything else that comes up.

Shipping Time:
Why deal with the silly postal service or those other courier companies? As mentioned above, book that overnight flight to your buyer’s city immediately upon payment and personally deliver the package yourself. Unfortunately this still may not be fast enough and scientists haven’t invented the “Beam me up Scottie” machine (sorry Trekkie fans I’m not an expert in Star Trek technology) so you could instantly beam the item to your buyer.

Shipping and Handling Charges:
FREE SHIPPING BABY! FREE SHIPPING BABY! FREE SHIPPING BABY! Offer free shipping and don’t even add the shipping cost into the price. Absorb all costs associated with shipping, packaging material, etc., even if you lose money. It’s not about making money anymore, it’s about getting those 5 pretty Stars.


……actually you can’t really do anything to GUARANTEE perfect 5 Star DSR ratings from every buyer on eBay, which is why we had fun with you above.

There are always going to be those few eBay buyers that rate sellers low on the detailed seller rating criteria no matter what you do or how perfect your product or service is. You could actually do all of the silly things above and I would bet there would still be some dumb eBay buyer that rates your DSRs low. If those eBay buyers could only understand how much those ratings (even 4 stars) can hurt a seller and prevent sellers from receiving eBay fee discounts.

On a more serious note, you can also check eBay’s Detailed Seller Ratings page where they have more ideas on what you can do to make sure the smart eBay buyers don’t have a reason to leave you low DSRs. If you’re a buyer and you’re reading this, there is also some info for you to read there to help you understand how to properly rate an eBay seller.

To be honest, eBay is a fantastic market place, offering career opportunities to so many serious sellers and off course an opportunity to buyers to purchase the items at relatively lower than local offline market or any other portal. eBay has also played a fair share in development of ecommerce market place in India. Also, personally I am not against Feedback system; however, I strongly feel that half witted Indian online market place particularly is not ready for such sensitive DSR system.

Ebay has a Top Rated Seller programme eTRS.
This is in 3 groups of ebay sites:
1)US
2)UK,Ireland
3)Germany,Austria,Switzerland
This shows as flags of these countries in seller dashboard.
I am Top Rated Seller in all 3 groups.
If, an old man, I can do it from my eBay India shop, anybody can do it.

I care a S**T now for the PS status and DSR's,what the hell, who will die for useless tags which do you no good, Indian buyer go for price tag so let them, forget about all other things on ebay and let's make money.

Coming to the all 5.0 rating for Amitava sir, my personal belief is that it is by sheer luck and nothing else that he has got full 5.0. Sorry Amitavaji just comparing nothing personal but I cannot help comparing though its like comparing apples and oranges but still just for argument sake. I will take it point wise.

1. His scans are far from optimal, infact what images he has given in the top small square is useless as one cannot see any details at all. He has not provided any scans at 300dpi on the listing page in any of his listings. I don't know what people check and on what basis they buy these items. Still he has a rating of 5.0 in "Item as described" so it means that all his buyers find his images 100% perfect and no one finds any flaws in his listing, very surprising. Its like getting 100 out of 100 in English or Hindi exam paper.

2. Second parameter "Communication", this is also very dicey, some people find many emails as too much and for some more emails is better, how do you judge what's the right mail content and how many mails to send to the buyer that he is happy and give you a full 5.0. Here also he has a 5.0.

3. In shipping parameter also he ships by speedpost only. You mean to say that never has speedpost delayed or lost his single parcel. Come on we all know what is condition of speedpost and its very hard to believe that not even one parcel is lost or misplaced or delayed. I sent one 250gms packet to Delhi from Mumbai by speedpost and it took nine days(I have proof) and I got a negative for that. But even in shipping he has a full 5.0.

4. In Shipping and handling charges parameter also he has a full 5.0 which is just luck because his shipping charges for the content is much higher than what we normally charge for example for 3 stamps he charges Rs.40 as courier charges. Remember that most of his items or all his items comes under printed matter and documents and NOT PARCELS, whereas all our items ship as parcels and we have free shipping for 80% of our item and still we do not get 5.0 for Shipping and handling charges.

Now you decide if this is the result of hard work or just luck or something else like the hand of God.

or let me put it this is way...
Is there any quantitative measurement for how much communication is OK with the customer? or How much shipping cost is OK with the customer? Ain't we putting our shipping costs upfron in the listing, if yes, why customer rate low on shipping costs? And if he has wanted free shipping why he purchased the item at first place. I offer free shipping on 60% of my items these are the items which sell 95% of the times, that is mobile phones. Still i have got 4.6 in shipping and handline charges.
So what is the quantitative measurement for what is ok and what is not ok with the customer? buy genuine mobiles at unbeatable price.

What i feel is that the DSR ratings for indian sellers should come down to atleast 4.3 keeping in mind of an indian market or else a time would come there would be only sellers and NO POWERSELLERS...

That is my suggestion.
This can be raised afterwards when members learn ebay culture and learn to respect another fellow indian.

Just sharing 2 instances with 2 separate buyers.

This is my 99% lot:- Buyer A purchased a mobile phone from me. unfortunately, it was found DOA (Dead on Arrival). he called me to ask if he is covered, I said i can cover that its not an issue (1200 bucks cell phone, hardly matters. can sacrifice for a good customer). I got the phone picked up from him in 24 hours, and sent the alternate item same day, which went lost in courier. He said its not an issue and was ready to take the loss. i told him, i am coming to delhi next day and will deliver it by hand, since its on my way to my brothers home in delhi. Today I delivered it to him, Had a cup of coffee at his home all went well.

this 0.01 percentile:-
Second instance:- buyer purchased mobile on 18th May, i dispatched the product same day. (it takes 72 hours to deliver a product from Amritsar to Delhi) today, this guys sent me mail stating last time when he ordered item was delivered next day. he also threatened me of negative feedback. buy genuine mobiles at unbeatable price.
