I am a new eBay.in seller and have heard many a times about Importer Exporter Code (IEC for short) on this board. I have some very common questions about it :-

1. What is an Importer Exporter Code? (i.e. is it an I-Card, or a plain document or just a simple number )

2. What are the benefits of IEC ? (i.e. facilitates custom clearance, provides duty free import and export or something like that etc. etc.)

3. How do we use IEC ? (i.e. do we have to mention it in customs form, or write it on the envelope etc. etc.)

4. What are the basic procedures for shipping internationally ? (i.e. go to the Post Office with your parcel/envelope, then what ?)

5. What custom forms should be filled and where to get them from ?

6. Is Speed Post the best method for shipping internationally and what does it cost and what time it takes to ship to US or Europe ?

Can an Individual apply for an IE Code or only a Company/Firm can apply for it?

You can obtain IEC code by applying for the same to directorate general for foreign trade (for detail pl see www.dgft.delhi.nic.in website).

IMPORT EXORT CODE IS THE LICENSE WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO TRADE INTERNATIONALLY.

THE PROCEDURE TO GET IS :-

IT CAN BE BOTTH FOR AN INDIVIDUAL AS WELL AS FOR A FIRM.

THE BASIC REQUIRMENTS ARE :-

-2 PHOTOGRAPHS
-ADDRESS PROOF OF INDIVIDUAL OR FIRM
-BANK STATEMENT AND THE LETTER BY THE BANK STATING THAT SO AND SO HAS AN ACCOUNT WITH US FROM SO AND SO DATE
-THEN ITS AN ID PROOF
-AFTER THIS YOU HAVE TO GET AN APPLOCATION FORM FROM DGFT( DIRECTOR GENERAL OF FORIEGN TRADE).
-FILL IN THE FORM CLEARLY.
THEN MAKE TWO CPOIES AND SENT TO THE OFFICE OF DGFT.
- THE IE CODE COMES WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF WORKING DAYS


IE CODE IS ALWAYS USED WHEN TRADING INTERNATIONALLY. WHENER YOU SELL OR BUY ANYTHING THROUGH PORTS LIKE AIRPORT, SEA ETC ALONG WITH THE PACKING LIS OF THE MATERIAL THEY ASK FOR IE CODE, WHICH IS THE PROOF THAT YOU CAN TRADE INTERNATIONALLY.


ITS USED ONLY WHEN YOU DISPATCH GOODS THROUGH THE PORTS. IT MAKES THE TRADE VERY EASIER.

WELL TO SHIP INTERNATIOANLLY ITS BETTER TO USE COURIER SERVICES LIKE FEDEX ETC AS THEY ARE VERY CHEAP.

Hi I am new to ebay international sellings and i sell books through ebay. I have an IEC code.
But I do not know the procedure to officially sell international through ebay.
could you pls guide me through this. that wat all documents are required to officially sell through ebay. i.e how an international payment is made legal through paisapay.

Yes...an individual can apply for an IEC code only in undertaking that its for his personal use....like if u r in some sports or some personal need...etc....u cannot use ot for trade...!!!

After getting the Import Export Code; I think the customs procedure is quite complicated in India.

What If I have Import Export Code ? what about custom's duty amount and all that clearance, the courier carrier told me that the customs needs to be paid by buyer on receiving it..??
