Online Workshop on changes in Mobiles & Accessories category, Feb 3, 4 PM

Dear Sellers,

As part of our continuous effort to improve user experience for our members, we are making some important changes in the Mobile & Accessories category:

1. Mobiles & Accessories category will be divided into two categories called Mobile Phones and Mobile Accessories. This will give mobile accessories increased exposure. It will also improve search experience in Mobile Phones category, which today is compromised due to presence of related accessories.

2.The Final Value Fee (FVF) for Mobile Accessories category will be 5%. The FVF for Mobile Phones will continue to be at 1%. This new FVF structure will help in better aligning the eBay pricing structure to the seller’s margin structure in Mobiles Accessories category.

These changes will apply from February 7th 2010. In the new Mobiles Accessories category, all listings that sell successfully post February 7th 2010 00:00:01 IST will be charged 5% FVF. For example – If the item was listed on 6th February, and it sells successfully on 7th February, the FVF will be charged at 5%. The successful listings in Mobile Phones category will continue to be charged at 1%. There will be no changes to the Insertion Fee or Final Value Fee for any other category.

All the current or scheduled listings of Mobile Accessories sub-category will be automatically migrated to the new category of Mobile Accessories. The listings created on or after 7th February 2010 will need to be created under the new category, Mobiles Accessories.

We understand that you will need to make some changes to your current business plan to accommodate these changes. Thanks for posting your view on the community boards.

You had mentioned in your post that if the item price is expensive than increased visibility may not help. In accessories average selling price of eBay is Rs.300/- to Rs.400/- in which by increasing 4% FVF, price will go up by Rs.12/- to Rs.16/-. It may not resist some one from buying an accessory on eBay. Also price is not the only criteria for choosing the mobile accessory. eBay offers one of the widest range of accessories for mobiles and it will be very difficult for the buyer to find similar inventory in offline retail or other online portals.

Many of our sellers are very proactive in terms of launching latest and hard to find accessories for mobiles. So, variety and the convenience also will play a key role in buying accessories from eBay. For price sensitive product lines like mobile handsets and other Tech items we kept our pricing unchanged.

eBay sends coupon to both buyers and sellers. Sellers who receive coupons can use them for their purchases on eBay.

That I know but we want discount in selling fees like in Home page featured, many other high valued options. If eBay offers it that would be a great advantage to us.

Anyone coming to eBay is not always an impulse buyer. Many people also are in need. and they are always looking for best price and have a tendency to buy the item in lowest price(human nature). I was putting a simple point that on ebay sellers have to keep in mind the extra shipping charge and on top of that if eBay fees are increased they would increase item price because seller is not going to pay that from his pocket. To prove the fact I myself wanted to buy a printer on ebay but as found same model available in local market for 1800 while on ebay minimum price was 2400. Its not hard to guess where I finally bought it from. Not that seller on ebay is having more margin but he has added shipping + selling fees. So deal was lost.

Also I see that eBay is always distributing coupons, My mail I am getting them every week. Its not hard to figure from where do funds for coupons come from.

Currently their is huge potential in India for eBay to grow with broadband and computers reaching even villages.

Distributing coupons to old buyers(with coupons) will no doubt keep them hooked in but will have a negative impact on new buyers(without coupons) as these coupons are indirectly increasing the prices. It may offend many but limiting this will have a positive impact on sales.
