Overseas business boosting eBay
eBay is growing in popularity around the world
Internet auction website eBay has seen its latest profits surge 52% thanks to high spending global shoppers, and a strong showing at its PayPal unit.
Beating Wall Street expectations, eBay made a net profit of $377m (£188m) for the first three months of 2007, compared with $248m a year earlier.
Its revenues rose 27% to $1.8bn, with the split between what it makes in the US and overseas now equal.
Last year the US accounted for 54% of revenues, and overseas 46%.
Revenues at PayPal, eBay's online payments service, which is used by a host of websites, grew 31% to $439m.
'Feel very good'
"I would say it was a very strong quarter across the board," said eBay chief executive Meg Whitman.
The company now expects to achieve revenues of up to $7.45bn in 2007, an increase from its previous forecast of $7.3bn.
"I think we feel very good about the remainder of the year," added Ms Whitman.
During its first quarter, 82.9 million eBay users sold $14.28bn of items.
