Import of electronic goods through post

Can i import electronic goods through post to India for personal home use. If so what will be the duty i have to pay.

I am planning to buy a AV receiver from Ebay seller at USA. The total cost of the item along with shipping charges will come to $450.

As far as i know, electronic goods above Rs 2000 are prohibited to import through post. If so penalty will be levied by customs officer. Moreover duty will be calculated as per tariff head 9804.

So please let me know how to get this item imported to me at the lowest customs duty and without any customs penalty

my advise on the situation on hand, dont even try it moreso when the seller does not put the full description and declare it as sale reference ebay sale, it would be a death knell.
the alternative is tedious, register as a trader thus get specific IEC code and see that the seller follows all steps as an exporter would be required,
practically personal use is just out,penalty is discretionary that worrying
