I am planning to buy golf equipment from ebay USA and would like it to be delivered in India. Can anybody tell me about the custom duty imposed on such goods and does the courier pays for it to be charged later at the time of delivery?

u should contact the seller and clarify the custom charges beforehand... u can even clarify the shipping service to be used. u may visit that shipping company's website and figure out the charges from there, if mentioned there...

http://www.cbec.gov.in/cae/customs/cs-tariff/cus-tariff-2005/chapters-2k5/chap-95.pdf
This shows the table of customs charges for sports goods.
Also you can request your seller to send it as a gift. But make sure there is a proper invoice from seller with the item, usually customs people look for these invoices and taxes are imposed on the basis of this. You can ask the seller to show a reduced value too.
