Reserve or Not??

Last November I auctioned 5 Indian Rugs, all with a reserve price, in a 7 day auction and none of them reached the reserve price (not even close!) even though, in my opinion, the reserves were realistic. As a consequence none of the rugs were sold. I later discovered that, being new to EBay and with no positive feedbacks, buyers were probably concerned about buying goods with a reserve from an EBay "virgin". To overcome the feedback problems I have subsequently sold other items without a reserve and have now built up 17 positive feedbacks. Due to my lack of EBay knowledge I also put the rugs up for auction 4 o'clock on a Monday afternoon and as a consequence the auction finished 4 o'clock on a Monday afternoon... probably not the best of finishing times!

I am now considering putting these rugs back up for auction but should I NOT put a reserve on and risk them selling for next to nothing or should I put a higher starting price instead and risk putting buyers off with the higher price. I've researched other rug sellers and none of them appear to put a reserve price on... how can they take the risk of their rugs selling for next to nothing... or am I missing something??

Seems like no one responded.. oh well

Hey rugs_4_us,
I suggest you to increase the starting price of the rugs to their original cost. Also, charge shipping justfully. It increses bids as I have observed. Hope this Helps

Hello,

I would suggest that you still try with a reserve price.

Thats because it makes sense to be aggressive when you are experienced.

You are still learning the art of selling on ebay.

But why do you think that 4'O clock Monday was not the best time to end an auction? I feel its a nice time as many of the white collared would be at liesure after finishing their work load.

Once you master the selling technique you would dare to throw your Auction at Rs.1 with ZERO shipping.

But don't burn your fingers till you have faith in yourself. .

Hi,

If you do not receive too many bids regularly then I think you may start with higher starting price commensurate to your expectation. But if you want to be aggressive then you can take on the suggestion of Umang (indconcepts) as he is much much more experienced than me.

Weekday afternoon is a nice time to end auctions. Many people log in from their offices. Your time of 4PM includes all sets of regular duty hours and even some shift duty hours. Some users working from home also log in during this time. So you can continue with that as per my opinion. .
