Pricing Changes on eBay India

Together with you we have been pursuing the goal of growing the online shopping business in India. To do this we have been investing continuously, along with our seller-members, to achieve the common objective of buyer delight.

Changes in eBay Fees: Post discussions with our key sellers across categories and after understanding the commercial dynamics of the ‘supply-chain’ in various product categories, we have made changes to the eBay.in fee structure and these can be viewed on the announcement board.

It seems that either the eBay India is facing turbulent times due to increase in cut-throat competition from other online portals and hence increasing operating fees due to lesser number of buyer orders or they want to promote the global buy by reducing local competition.

Anyway, whatever be the case, the eBay would have taken care to avoid loosing their faithful sellers and buyers who would now be looking forward to other websites due to higher selling & purchasing costs.

Those sellers who want to survive on eBay India would have no option but to reduce the number of listings and increase the price upto 5% higher to cater the current fee increase in various segments. This would again result in further decrease of overall orders and business.

This situation reminds us of a famous quote by the captain of Titanic to all the occupants when the situation become out of control i.e. to take care of their own interests by themselves by announcing “Every Man For Himself”.

We can only hope that it would not be the case here and things would improve in near future before the sellers loose their survival battle.

We understand your concern about pricing on other sites & therefore we have consciously made an effort to keep the pricing same in categories which are highly price sensitive such as mobile phones, laptops, desktop monitors, LCD, Gold and diamond jewelery.

However, based on our past experience and our sellers’ feedback, we believe that there is room for increasing eBay’s take in the transactions.

Sellers may need to analyze their pricing to accommodate the changes in eBay fee. Best competitive prices will emerge over a period as we are an open market place and the seller margins will evolve accordingly.

wtplindia, I agree with you. But, can you give me a single example where ebay has changed their decision even after sellers and buyers were unhappy and written lines and lines in the discussion board??

I think we are just wasting our times writing here in hope that ebay will do something for us or will change their decision.. But No.. They didn't in the past or they won't in future.

Even if they do, it will be like our Govt. does on Petrol price.. First they hike it by 5 Rs. and then lower this by 50 paisa.. ha ha..

That's the reason other sites I mentioned in my previous post are gaining popularity so fast.

In order for our sellers to remain competitive to the offline as well as online market, we have not increased the final value fees in the price sensitive categories which include Mobile Phones, Laptops, Desktop PCs, Monitors, LCD & LED TVs. Hence the pricing of the products may not be impacted.

While we agree that the buyers would look for cheaper products, the purchase criterion is always the value they derive out of the transaction. This will also result in repeat transactions.

We do not think this will increase the turnover. As i am prepared to packoff from ebay, may be some other sellers are also feeling same. This is ebay attitude which will kill ebay itself. For sure seller's will leave one by one and for sure price will increase which will decrease the turnover. After all this you gonna get less revenue than what you are getting now. We seller's can only suggest. Rest depends on ebay india. You are much more talented.

Dear linusstudios,

We have observed that you sell in the lifestyle categories. Buyers in these categories do not necessarily evaluate their purchase basis the pricing.

For a seller who sells in the lifestyle category which has reasonable margins and offers good customer service will continue to attract new buyers as they would eventually see value in the transaction.
