Tips for New Sellers!

Hi,
I am Tanya. I work in eBay with the seller programs team to help new sellers build their business on eBay. I thought I would share some selling tips which may help you sell more everyday!

LISTING TIPS

• Product: Try uploading unique/hard to find products, that will excite buyers into instant online purchase.

Picture : A good clear picture says more than a detailed description. This is especially true for categories like apparels, jewellery, toys, etc where impulse buying is high. Imagine, you have a nice pair of earring with good description; however picture is such that one can hardly make out the design. I am sure, it will be difficult to find buyers, even at an attractive price. I would also suggest always put your picture on top of the page to attract attention rather than below the description. Show the product from every angle so that the buyer has a clear picture of the product that he would wish to buy.

• Your title must be packed with appropriate keywords relevant to the product so that if any buyer is searching for a product that you have, your listing comes up during search results. Put yourself in the buyers’ shoes and see whether your title has those keywords that you would use for a product while searching for a product similar to what you are selling.

Description once again must be detailed and very transparent. If the product is second hand, mention the same. Do not portray anything that is not true. Once again check whether your description has all the information a buyer would want to know about your product.

Warranty/guarantee Since buyers are making payment in advance for a product they have not physically seen, it would a great idea if you could boost their confidence by providing some sort of warranty/guarantee so that they are rest assured of their purchases.

• Offer as many Payment methods as possible since it allows the buyer to choose a payment method that he is comfortable with. As an advice, you must offer online payment option PaisaPay as most buyers prefer this payment method. It is safe and at the same time the quickest way of closing a transaction successfully.

Some tips Post Sales

• Once you receive a sale, act upon it immediately and get in touch with your buyer either through phone or email. Remember that the buyer at the time of purchase does not have your contact details and does not even know to whom he is sending his money. Therefore always keep in touch with your buyers at every stage so that he has confidence & trust that his money is safe and he will get his product in the specified time period.

• Always be customer service orientated. If possible, go out of his way to help and solve his doubts/clarifications as effectively as possible. Always be prompt in replying to your buyers. Incase the buyers complains about product being faulty or not as per their expectation, try offering replacement.

• Always try to rate your buyers positively which in return fetch you positive points. This helps build your business online as most buyers look at your feedback received by you as a seller for any purchases from you.

Incase a transaction fails due to non payment from your buyer, do report the buyer by following the Unpaid Item Process in time so that you do not end up getting billed for a transaction that was not complete.

General Tips

• Increasing your Portfolio: Try browsing ebay as much as possible and study what is selling at what price points. Try sourcing these products if you can. There are many features on the site that help you understand what is in demand, to name some we have the
o Completed Listing Only feature (InAdvanced Search Section)
o Want it Now Feature
o ebay Pulse
o Market Place Research
These tools give a fair indication of what products buyers are generally searching, buying and want to buy.

• Try to offer competitive price to the extent possible, however at the same time maintaining quality standards.

• Do visit the community boards often and interact with other ebay sellers on their selling experience and pick up some selling tips from them. Also share your experiences or any selling tips that you might have worked well with you.

• Do use some feature listings as this definitely helps get your products under the buyers view and chances of sales increase.

• Do keep yourself updated with the themes/promotions running at all times and if possible upload products accordingly. Do not loose the opportunity of free promotions that ebay provides. All promotions are announced on Announcement Boards Post

Selling on Ebay is easy and at the same time its fun!!! The idea of getting a positive feedback after every successful sale is very exciting for me. Another exciting part is the ability to interact with people from various parts of country, people whom I would have never known otherwise.

The above are my viewpoints. If you agree, disagree or want to offer your viewpoint, or have more questions please feel free to post here.

I hope you will find the above useful!

Dear rampras_r2002,

I am glad you found my advise useful.

In order to help you sell your item on ebay through a third party,we have something called the Trading Assistant that will sell on your behalf.

Trading Assistants are experienced eBay sellers who will sell your items on eBay for a fee. However Trading Assistants operate independently as eBay sellers, and are not employees, agents or partners of eBay

To find a Trading Assistant in Chennai, please click the following link and put in your Pin Code and find the nearest Trading Assistant to you

http://tradingassistant.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?TradingAssistant&page=main

Do get back to us for any further clarification

Hi Tanya,

I am a new seller and I am trying to sell Tribal paintings and artifacts (such as Serving Trays, Coasters etc). I have listed the items under categories
Hobbies & Collectibles and
Home, Decor & Furnishings
which I believe my products fall under.
However I have not got any buyer (for fixed price items) nor are any bids received for the auction item yet.

How do I know whether potential buyers have seen the listing or not?

More importantly, when I try to Subscribe to a Shop, I get message that I need a positive feedback score of 5 before I can 'set up' shop. I do not understand the logic behind this restrictive move. Can you please explain and guide me how I can go about getting feedback ?

Thank you
Soma Iyengar

Dear somaiyengar,

There is a feature available on the Sell Form " Visitor Counter". By selecting this counter it helps you track the number of unique visitors on your listing pages. By tracking the number of visitors, you will be able to understand how many potential buyers visit your listings and how many actually buy. Based on the same you may want to make some changes in your pricing, shipping charges etc or add more details to your description.

You may also use some promotional tools to help market your products to make them more visible to buyers.

The Visitor Counter can be selected from the "Show Options " link located under the sell form.

You may try listing more items in order to give a variety of choice to potential buyers. Also you may want to try listing products internationally as we see that your product category have huge potential internationally.

eBay Shop- As you rightly pointed out, it is essential that you must gather minimum of a 5 positive feedback to subscribe for shop. We feel that a seller needs to have some experience in transacting on eBay and understand the eBay business before he opens a shop.

P.S- The 5+ feedback can be both from buying and selling

Hi Tanya,

I am new to EBay. Joined this month.
have listed my products Men's Shirts in Buy it Now / Easy to Buy & also Auction.
i have used many paid service for listing...border / highlight / image show ...
i have registered with Paypal

however, it is very disheartening as i have not received even one enquiry. i have listed my products atleast 3 times through various formats.

now i wonder, does it make sense to keep relisting, or is my product not suitable for eBay site.

you see i cant change my product as i am a manufacture & have joined eBay as a seller to increase my business online. i already have a reasonable market offline.

i keep getting a message to offer international service, however i don't have export / import code still. can i then offer my products for sale internationally.

i request you to guide me on how i should list my products on eBay site to meet success.

warm regards

Dear pratyay_mukherjee,

On eBay Music and Movies is a restricted category and in order to seller cd's and dvd's you need to have prior approval from eBay.

Please click the link below to contact the concerned department for approval on selling cd's and dvd's. You will get a reply from our team with a set of instructions that you need to follow which will allow you to start listing on eBay under these categories.

http://pages.ebay.in/help/policies/movies_music.html

You may use services of courier company such as Blue dart, Bombino, DHL to ship your items. It would be advisable that you meet courier companies in your city and see which company offers you good rates which your buyers can benefit from.

Should you have any further clarifications, please do get in touch with me.

Dear svhandicraft,

Selling on eBay is simple.

a) Register on eBay for FREE
b) List your item for FREE (chargeable tools available to help you sell effectively but are optional)
c) If buyer purchases your item, he makes the payment to you in advance in full
d) You may charge your buyers the courier charges to ship the product to him if you cannot bear those charges
e)You pay eBay a nominal fees if your transaction is completed successfully.

eBay Fees
If your item price is upto Rs 4000/-, you will be charged 5 % of the item price. If your item price is above Rs 4000/-, the difference between your item price and Rs 4000/- will be charged at 2.5%

International Listing: Should you choose to list your products internationally, the following fees are applicable

Item Price upto Rs 4000/- Rs 15 per listing ( irrespective whether your product sells or not)
Item price above Rs 4000/- Rs 30/- per listing (irrespective whether your product sells or not)

I would ask our eBay Training Team to get in touch with you shortly to help you list your item on eBay. You can also get in touch with the training team on TOLL FREE 1800-22-3229 (MTNL/BSNL)or alternatively email on training.india@ebay.com
