Dead on Arrival of Philips portable dvd player

Have bought portable DVD player and gifted to my old parents in Coimbatore. It is a dead on arrival. There are no service center nearby and 80+ years old people cannot handle this. I opened a case with ebay and had long calls...they are closing the case to take it up with manufacturer.

The supplier doesnt have reverse pickup facility.

 

How do I deal with this case? I feel ebay need to take the responsibility for cancelling the transaction and provide me refund. I am purchasing items with ebay's reputation in mind & such a irrresponsible behaviour from ebay is very discouraging for any online purchase which they will walk away to take it with manufacturer.

 

Has anyone got such resolution handled? Is going to consumer court only solution.

Any help from the members on showing the best approach is much appreciated.
