Issuance of Show Cause Notice for Improper Export

Fellow Ebayers,

I'm new to this world, hence, please bear with me if this has been already been answered.

I greatly appreciate if some can answer my questions.

Early Sep, I bought a dual wan broadband router from abroad. Last week, I got a show cause notice from Postal Appraising Department stating that it is an offence to import this product without a import license. I'm given 10 days to solve this.

After digging some india customs website and ebay.in, I cam to know that you are not required to have an IEC if you are importing for personal use.

Now I'm confused. What should I tell them ?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm about to meet them this week.

PS: The product is for actual personal use and I bought it from eBay.com worth around $400. I'm ready to pay duties for this product.

Hello,
You are right. But I still suggest that you please take out an IEC.It took me just two days. But you cant save the duties in any case.
These people are bad guys. But they have some powers. You got to be careful. They can do harm.
Thanx,

OH! The lure of getting something real cheap lures all of us Indians.

I think Indians should stick to buying from Indian sites and sellers and not get stuck with customs. There are many horror stories on the board.

Anyway even when importing for personal use, all duties and taxes have to be paid.

As for importing a wifi device, I am not 100% sure of the rules but I think there is something called a WPC license which needs to be had before importing a wireless device. More information can be had at http://www.wpc.dot.gov.in/

Now since it is a single import, your best bet would be to go and meet the Customs official in the Post Office and explain him your situation. At best, he would release your consignment on payment of said duties and some chai pani. At worst the consingment would be seized and if the officer is really mean, he can initiate criminal proceeding against you for importing a WiFi device without the above said license.

I once again advice all Indian to spean a couple of rupees more rather than getting into the hassle of importing from foreign sellers. Lets the specialists do the job. They will even provide you warranties for the products.
